Mid-America Freight Coalition

The Mid America Freight Coalition (MAFC) is a regional organization that supports innovation and collaboration in freight planning, freight operations, and research across the ten states of the Mid America Association of State Transportation Officials (MAASTO). The MAASTO States are at the crossroads of freight movement and share key interstate freight corridors, inland waterways and the Great Lakes, air cargo facilities, and host all major rail carriers. Working collaboratively, MAFC and the MAASTO states work to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient multimodal freight movement.

Leadership and Freight History

With the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, his policy and impacts on freight efficiency were highlighted in the Sunday, December 29 edition of FreightWaves. One of the changes detailed in the article tracks the impacts of deregulation in the trucking industry. According to the article, “Prior to the 1980s, the trucking industry was incredibly challenging to enter. One needed a route from the Interstate Commerce Commission — or to buy a route from a trucking company that already had one. Even becoming a truck driver was a feat; America’s trucking companies were largely unionized and such jobs were hard to land.” Click the button below to read more about deregulation in transportation during the Carter presidency and its impact on freight efficiency.

MAFC Charter

The industries and farms of the Mississippi Valley region can compete in the marketplace only if their products can move reliably, safely and at reasonable cost to market. Growing congestion threatens the sustainability of this freight movement. The people of the region are dependent upon farms and industries for their livelihoods and their economic quality of life depends on the flow of goods to our markets. Therefore, the Mid-America Freight Coalition is created to protect and support the economic wellbeing of the industries, farms and people of the region by keeping the products of those industries, farms and people flowing to markets reliably, safely, and efficiently.
