BNSF’S Cicero Intermodal Terminal (CHC) is located in Chicago, IL. This terminal is one of four BNSF intermodal terminals in the Chicago area. The others are Corwith in Chicago, Willow Springs in Hodgkins, IL, and Logistics Park Chicago in Elwood, IL. Interstate 55 provides efficient access to Cicero. CHC can also be accessed via I-290.

Cicero’s yard is a major BNSF intermodal hub. Cicero yard is part of the Chicago Subdivision and handles both trailer and container (TOFC-COFC) traffic. According to the 2013 National Transportation Atlas Database, a number of freight railroads have trackage rights over this subdivision: Canadian National, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, and Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad (CSS). Amtrak and Metra also have trackage rights. There are two commuter rail stations at Cicero.

CHC is part of the CREATE series of projects to improve rail flows through Chicago. A connection will be built to allow connection between BNSF Cicero and Corwith Yards. The projects are listed as WA4 and WA5 on the CREATE website.

The BNSF intermodal terminals in Chicago have different but dependent functions, especially in regards to one major shipper, UPS. Given the small capacity at BNSF Willow Springs, a terminal co-located with UPS, it is not operationally feasible to load UPS trailers at that location. UPS drives its trailers between the Willow Springs sorting facility and Cicero.

CHC is also located on BNSF’s Corridors of Commerce, specifically the Great Northern and the TransCon Corridors.
