Union Pacific’s (UP) Global II Intermodal Terminal (GB2) is located in Northlake, IL. This terminal is one of five UP intermodal terminals in the Chicago area. The others are Global I in Chicago, Global III-Rochelle, Global IV-Joliet, and Yard Center, in Dolton, IL.
Access to the terminal is via I-290 via Manheim or Lake Street. Interstate I-294 borders the facility but does not have an exit to Lake Street. The Global II facility handles both trailers and containers.

According to UP’s 2012 Form 10-K, Global II ranks eighth in terms of volume among UP intermodal facilities. The intermodal terminal as shown in the access map is co-located with Proviso Yard, the fifth largest yard for Union Pacific handling 1,300 cars per day in 2012 and 1,400 cars per day in 2013.

Global II, according to the 2013 National Transportation Atlas Database, is located on the Geneva Subdivision. The UP Milwaukee Subdivision connects to the Geneva in Proviso Yard. Metra and the short line Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad (CSS) have trackage rights over this subdivision.

CREATE’s B-2 project is associated with Global II and Proviso yard. Construction is underway to improve the flow of commuter and trains with the addition of a 3.5 mile third mainline. Other benefits include increased pedestrian safety at passenger stations along the METRA line.
