Norfolk Southern’s (NS) Livernois Intermodal Terminal (LIV) is one of two NS intermodal terminals in Michigan. The other is the Detroit-Delray Intermodal Terminal. LIV is located adjacent to the CSX Detroit (Dix Avenue) facility. This joint CSX/NS facility is also referred to as the Livernois-Junction Yard.
According to the Michigan State Rail Plan, NS along with other railroads in Detroit; CSX, Canadian National (CN), and Canadian Pacific (CP) will fund improvements to the rail network in order to improve truck flows within the city. This effort, known as the Detroit Intermodal Freight Terminal (DIFT) study, produced an alternative for consolidating the intermodal operations of the CSX, NS, and CP railroads at the Livernois-Junction Yard. The CP Detroit facility will serve non-intermodal purposes in the future.
According to the 2013 National Transportation Atlas Database, the facility is located on the Shore Line Subdivision. The Livernois Yard can be accessed via trackage rights over other rail lines. A number of railroads have trackage rights over this line.
