The CenterPoint Intermodal Center (CIC) is a 6,500-acre logistics center spanning parts of Elwood and Joliet, IL in Will County. Two rail intermodal terminals, the BNSF Logistics Park Chicago (LPC), and Union Pacific’s (UP) Global IV (GLB4) anchor the CenterPoint development. CIC incorporates rail, intermodal, trucking, and transload functions in close proximity to distribution and logistics companies. The high concentration of freight qualifies CIC as an inland port.

GLB4 which is also referred to as UP-Joliet, is one of five UP intermodal terminals in the Chicago area. The others are Global I in Chicago, Global II in Northlake, IL, Global III in Rochelle, IL, and Yard Center in Dolton, IL.

Global IV is a 550-acre facility that can easily be expanded. Global IV opened in 2010 and is classified as an emerging intermodal terminal. This facility was envisioned to serve international customers and allow business from other UP terminals to be shifted there to allow for future growth at those terminals. With Global IV, Union Pacific has intermodal capability in each of the four distribution centers/clusters in Chicago. Will County, is the fastest growing US county for logistics and transportation.

Interstates 55 and 80 provide access to Global IV.  Although I-80 is closest to the terminal, the Arsenal Road interchange on I-55 was built to access both terminals and railroad website directions indicate truckers to use Arsenal Road.  The other NHS routes shown on the map are newly designated under MAP-21.

Global IV’s capacity exceeds 500,000 lifts a year. According to UP’s 2012 Form 10-K, Global IV ranks third in lifts behind two container facilities in Los Angeles.

Global IV is located on the Joliet Subdivision. CN and Amtrak have track rights over this subdivision. Likewise, Union Pacific has trackage rights over the BNSF Chillicothe, and from the north over the CN line. Connections to the BNSF line and the UP Joliet were built as part of the construction of this facility.
