Union Pacific’s (UP) Global III Intermodal Terminal (GB3) is located in Rochelle, IL. This terminal is one of five UP intermodal terminals in the Chicago area. The others are Global I in Chicago, Global II in Northlake, IL, Global IV in Joliet, IL, and Yard Center in Dolton, IL.  Interstates I-39 and I-88 provide access to Rochelle. GB3 is located 80 miles west of downtown Chicago.  This 1,200-acre facility has a capacity of 720,000 lifts a year and opened in 2003.

This facility is a critical interchange hub and a loading/unloading terminal for rail intermodal shipments moving through western Iowa and Wisconsin.

Many UP trains originate or terminate at the Global III intermodal yard. A number of shuttle trains operate throughout the day, moving containers between Global III and other intermodal facilities in the Chicago area. The function of this terminal is primarily that of a block swap.

GB3 is located on the Geneva Subdivision. The ‘Other NHS’ routes shown on the map are newly designated NHS routes under Map-21.

There are several NHS designated roads in the vicinity of Global III. Intermodal Drive, which does not have intermodal connector designation, is classified as a truck route (Class II) with state jurisdiction according to the City of Rochelle.

Warehousing and Distribution

Rochelle, IL has seen an increase in a number of freight-related industry since the opening of Global III. The following map shows the locations of warehouses and distribution centers however there is significant industry in this area including the recently opened ‪Nippon Sharyo Manufacturing building passenger rail cars for METRA, food industry including Del Monte located next to Global III and resin plants that are servicing the emerging frac sand industry.
