This lock is currently\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mvp.usace.army.mil\/Portals\/57\/docs\/Civil%20Works\/Information%20Papers\/Mar%202013%20Info%20papers\/3%20OM%20LD8%20Winter%20Maintenance.Mar%2013.pdf\">undergoing renovation<\/a> and is completely dewatered, allowing attendees a unique opportunity to see the maintenance on the lock&#8217;s miter gates, bubbler system, and walls.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mvp.usace.army.mil\/Missions\/Navigation\/LocksDams\/LockDam8.aspx\">Lock and Dam 8<\/a> sees roughly 1500 commercial and 4500 recreational locks during the open-water season that lasts from April to December. The 600-foot lock is undergoing maintenance during the winter while the Upper Mississippi is closed to navigation. This 20-year maintenance doubles the number of USACE employees to more than forty.<br \/>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-3808 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure
