{"id":3863,"date":"2014-02-24T15:41:04","date_gmt":"2014-02-24T21:41:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/midamericafreight.org\/?page_id=3863"},"modified":"2018-12-06T21:42:07","modified_gmt":"2018-12-06T21:42:07","slug":"rail","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/midamericafreight.org\/index.php\/freight-system\/rail\/","title":{"rendered":"Rail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Transporting freight by rail offers more origin and destination pairs than maritime transportation and increased efficiency in long haul moves compared to trucking.\u00a0 A single unit train has the carrying capacity of 525 trucks and half that of a 15-barge tow.\u00a0 Similarly, rail can move one ton of freight 413 miles per gallon of fuel compare to 155 for trucking and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marad.dot.gov\/documents\/water_works_REV.pdf\">576 for inland maritime<\/a>. Rail is typically used for long-haul routes; the Association of American Railroads reports that in 2011 the average length of haul was 917.2 miles.\u00a0 Figure 1 shows both rail-related industry and the Class 1 rail network.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aar.org\/STATISTICSANDPUBLICATIONS\/Documents\/AAR-Stats-2013-04-17.pdf\">Class 1 railroads<\/a> are freight railroads with a 2011 operating employment for the freight transporting railroad industry is calculated from querying all line-haul and short-line railroads from ESRI\u2019s Business Analyst data set.\u00a0 The query was not able to completely remove passenger railways because of how the North American Industry Classification System (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/eos\/www\/naics\/\">NAICS<\/a>) is constructed.\u00a0 The total employment reported in Table 1 is an overestimate of the total jobs and businesses that are directly attributable to the transportation of freight via railway.<\/p>\n<h4>Table 1: Railroad
