CBO Report Examines Vehicle Mileage Tax For Trucks

A 43-page report issued by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) on October 17 examines whether a federal vehicle miles traveled or VMT tax on commercial trucks can help sustain the Highway Trust Fund, which the CBO projects will be “exhausted” of funding by 2022.

Innovative Infrastructure in the MAFC

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx recently announced $4.38 million in grants from the Federal Highway Administration’s Accelerated Innovation Deployment (AID) demonstration program. Two MAFC states–Kansas and Minnesota–where among the grantees.

Agency Amount Project Description
Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) $1,000,000 KDOT will use its AID grant to offset the cost of a technology project known as “CANSYS III” designed to integrate roadway data from the best available sources into a singular, authoritative and innovative transportation geospatial data system. KDOT expects that this type of geospatial data collaboration (an innovation supported by FHWA under EDC) will significantly improve its data collection efforts.
Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) $1,000,000 MnDOT will use AID funding on Intelligent Compaction (an innovation supported by FHWA under EDC) and Infrared technologies for 10 paving projects that will put in place long life asphalt pavement with lower life cycle costs and improved construction quality.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is seeking a Freight Project Coordinator.
This position located in Topeka and serves the citizens of Kansas by assisting the Freight and Rail Unit manager with multimodal freight transportation planning activities including research, data collection and analysis, modeling, report preparation and presentations. The Freight Project Coordinator:

  • Leads or assists with management of freight studies and updates for the Agency’s Freight and Rail Unit.
  • Communicates regularly with freight transportation stakeholders to provide assistance and gather information regarding multimodal freight transportation in Kansas.
  • Represents the Agency to external and internal customers with regard to state and federal freight transportation programs.
  • Prepares written and verbal reports about program and study status for KDOT Management.
  • Coordinates Oversize/Overweight freight planning activities for the Agency.
